North Western River Basin Management Plan: 2009 - 2015
The North Western River Basin Management Plan looked at all aspects of water management. It says where the water environment needed to be protected or improved, the timeframe to make these improvements and how that could be achieved. Consultation ran from 22 December 2008 until 22 June 2009 and the plan was published in December 2009.

In addition, the document ‘Working Together – Managing Our Shared Waters – the North Western International River Basin District’ outlines cooperation arrangements between the two jurisdictions, north and south, involved in implementing WFD in the shared waters.

Consultations following the first river basin management plan:
1. Timetable and consultation arrangements for development of the second cycle RBMPs
(22 December 2012 to 22 June 2013)
This consultation asks how NIEA can work better with a wide range of groups and individuals to deliver the first river basin management plans and develop the second river basin management plans.
2. Significant Water Management Issues consultation (22 December 2013 to 22 June 2014)
The Significant Water Management Issues Overview Report for the North Westernconsultation sets out the assessment of the pressures and impacts on the water environment; describes the progress made towards achieving objectives for 2015; and explains the significant water management issues that still need to be addressed.
3. Draft North Western River Basin Management Plan - 2014
A draft RBMP for the North Western River Basin District was published in December 2014 for public consultation. The draft RBMP builds upon the work undertaken as part of the significant water management issues consultation exercise in 2013/2014 by setting out the pressures impacting on the water environment and an updated programme of measures to address these pressures.
North Western River Basin Management Plan: 2015 – 2021
This second RBMP has been developed with input from a wide range of statutory agencies, non-governmental organisations, private individuals and companies.
There is also an interactive river basin map viewer providing access to information at a local water body level.
